Don’t criticise things you don’t understand or haven’t dived deeply into. It’s better to remain neutral and focus on what you want to create instead. For example if you don’t like Coldplay, I want to know why. Saying all their songs sound the same is not good enough (because I know you haven’t listened to their FULL albums). Or you don’t like the singer’s voice. Sorry, you’re gonna have to go deeper than that otherwise you immediately go in the “this person is full of shit” category for me and I would rather avoid such people because their energy is toxic. People like that lie to themselves all day long. They are lost in the jungle and think they are I also don’t like it when people say stupid things like “music is not what it used to be”. How did it used to be? Are you suggesting that there was a time in the past where all music was amazing? I’d love to know about this sacred era.
Learn to appreciate things you don’t like.
Don’t be lazy with your intellect.
Neutral is always a good starting point because it takes humility to just not know too much. Listen to others more with genuine curiosity as if you are talking to someone who’s mastered their own experience. We are all experts in who we are. I’m not. I have no idea who I am. I just create characters and play them. I impersonate myself and sometimes do an okay job.
I’m not a Bowie fan. I think Prince’s Purple Rain is a mediocre song at best. But I respect them. Bowie always looks cool and Prince was a pretty good guitar player. And I liked his first album. Just not a fan of either. I want to dive deeper though and read their biographies and listen to every album and track and who knows, I might become a superfan.
It’s happened before. I don’t like something and then I get into it and it clicks then I fall in love.
On the edge with TOOL right now. Kind of starting to love it…
