So Oscar, my Facebook maestro asked me what I think of social media.
(I don’t use FB myself currently so I delegated the task…)
Here are my thoughts.
I don’t really have anything against facebook or social media per se. I’ve learned to see them for what they are. Just tools. Like forks and knives. You can’t blame the fork if you think the food sucks. I just like to find my own way of doing things in life. Using facebook for personal reasons makes me feel too normal. This is uncomfortable for me when my whole identity revolves around being a weirdo, outcast, loner type (with an ego the size of China). For me it’s like a big party where everyone goes and then hangs out outside hugging and greeting all the people they know, pumping up their self-worth and basking in the the feeling of belonging. The human being is a social animal. Belonging meant survival back in the day. But then art involved. And philosophy. These pursuits are against all that belonging. Artists and philosphers need to fall in love with being alone and seeing what there is to be found. This is the world of death and destruction. It’s scary as hell and will drive most to madness and suicide. And then finding beauty in that through the creative process. Facebook is the anti-thesis of art and stepping into that artist role…
That said, I’m experimenting with finding my own way because I know that engaging in social media is very important for the business side of being a musician/artist. What I do is 50% business. That is something that has taken me a long time to come to terms with. But if I want the luxuries of the modern world (and I do), I do have to sell some ass. So I am not ready to go completely dark when it comes to social media and being social in general. How do I plan to keep my head on straight and feet on the ground while doing this? Cultivating that inner smile. That’s the answer. Easier said than done. But don’t let me fool you for a second into thinking that I don’t want to be rich and famous. This is also a survival strategy. I want a family one day and families are expensive. MRN
